What can I learn from this site?

Like most attorneys' websites, I'm not offering specific advice regarding any one person's legal matter. Rather, the focus of this blog is educating the citizens of the State of Michigan, and elsewhere worldwide, about changes that occur within our state's civil law system on a weekly basis. Specifically, my primary focus involves basic analysis of those appellate decisions announced by the Michigan Court of Appeals and the Michigan Supreme Court.

You might ask: Why? Because the laws of our state, like most jurisdictions, are not static. Rather, they are a frequently changing set of rules and principles that reflect the cultural priorities and preferences of those who govern, and indirectly, the will of the electorate. Michigan's Compiled Laws (MCL) also contains a number of interesting, odd and anachronistic laws that may surprise the reader. Example:

MCL 750.532 Seduction; punishment. Sec. 532.

Punishment-Any man who shall seduce and debauch any unmarried woman shall be guilty of a felony, punishable by imprisonment in the state prison not more than 5 years or by fine of not more than 2,500 dollars; but no prosecution shall be commenced under this section after 1 year from the time of committing the offense.

Most of the men who come into my office are unaware that they could be charged with a felony for seducing and 'debauching' an unmarried woman simply by engaging in a conventional dating relationship! Obviously this is not a very commonly enforced law. But it is not repealed; it is not "off the books."

It pays to know something about the law, and you don't have to be a lawyer to appreciate learning about the law. I hope you'll check in occasionally to find out something new.
